[Ship Lists] [The flag of India]

Exporting the labourers from India

When slavery was abolished, many British Colonies suffered from acute labour shortages. To improve the labour conditions, British Colonizers recruited workers from China, Portugal, India and other countries. The most successful groups of migrants were the "East Indians" from India, often referred to in the Colonial Records as the "coolies"

My grandmother, Somwaria, came with "SS 850BR 1902" with few sisters and they were indentured at Blairmont Estate, Berbice. Guyana

Few years later, my grandfather,Edu,came with "SS Sutley 1916" and was indentured at Rose Hall Estate, Berbice. Guyana

A cousin, Jaman from #63 Village, Berbice. Guyana, his indentured parents,Allie Baksh & Rogida, married on board the ship SHEILA. They were indentured at Port Mourant Estate, Berbice. Guyana

Edu Jahoor was born xx1896, in Uttar Pradesh. India
